"We only regret
The dead things
That we choose to
not to leave behind"
Commissioned by writer Garrett Ashe to accompany his poem Heft, this illustration visualizes the poem’s central theme: the pain of being unable to let go. The scene depicts a figure caressing a dead wolf whose teeth remain sunk into her arm. The image invites ambiguity — is she the one unable to release the wolf, or is the wolf still clinging to her?
Her calm expression conveys a sense of emotional numbness, reflecting how we grow used to carrying what no longer serves us. The sheep disguise hints at a hidden strength — perhaps suppressed, perhaps self-deceiving — concealed both from herself and by herself.
